A federal judge in Louisiana upheld telehealth access to abortion medication in a decision issued Tuesday afternoon, pausing the case Attorney General Liz Murrill filed against the U.S. Food and Drug Administration until the agency completes a safety review of the drug, mifepristone. After the ruling, Murrill indicated she remains optimistic about the eventual legal outcome.

A Louisiana Senate committee has blocked a proposal that would have made it a misdemeanor crime to leave loaded guns unsecured in the presence of young children, the mentally ill or anyone prohibited from having firearms. The author of the bill said she thought she had reached an agreement with pro-gun organizations, but they persisted in their opposition despite changes she made to the measure.

Current Louisiana law already allows the imprisoned to reduce their sentences by attaining bachelor’s or master’s degrees. An advancing proposal by Rep. Mandie Landry would add associate’s degrees to the list of degrees that incarcerated people can earn to receive 90 days toward the reduction of their sentence.

When Louisiana launched the country’s liquified natural gas export boom in 2016, LNG was touted as a cleaner, climate-friendly alternative to coal and oil. But the state’s first LNG terminal quickly became one of Louisiana’s largest sources of climate-warming pollution, releasing more greenhouse gases than its biggest oil refineries. An even larger source is on the way.

The state’s Teacher Bill of Rights and tenure protections provide detailed due process frameworks for educators accused of student abuse. No parallel, enforceable framework guarantees state-level follow-up for the children they harmed. Louisiana protects the credentials of adults who harm children more vigorously than it protects the children.
