Gov. Jeff Landry’s plan to provide another round of temporary pay stipends to public school employees could exclude thousands of positions that previously received the pay bump. The governor’s office said the public’s focus should mostly be on Landry’s advocacy for teachers receiving raises, though the stipends are not permanent pay increases.

In 49 states, the number of people enrolled in Obamacare plans has declined since Congress made coverage more expensive by allowing federal subsidies to expire at the end of last year. Louisiana has one of the nation’s highest opt-out rates.

Food safety leaders across the U.S. are raising alarms over federal cuts they say have made it harder to detect and stop the spread of foodborne illnesses, such as the recent outbreaks of cyclospora, which has sickened thousands in dozens of states. And they’re especially worried the next pathogen will be much more deadly.

Roughly 40 people gathered at the Hackberry Community Center last week for a public hearing on a planned carbon dioxide sequestration project in the area. If approved, the planned carbon sequestration injection well project would be the third of its kind in the state, and the second in Cameron Parish. The permit would allow Lake Charles-based Gulf Coast Sequestration to inject and sequester up to 19 million metric tons of CO2 underground level over a 30-year period.
