Task force starts work to tackle illegal dumping

Lax enforcement and gaps in state law are among the reasons Louisiana has not been able to curtail illegal dumping throughout the state, especially as it involves furtive waste tire disposal. A group the legislature created will make recommendations to lawmakers ahead of next year’s session to bolster enforcement and raise public awareness about the problem..

Southern University board chair wants dress code for campuses

The leader of Southern University’s Board of Supervisors said he wants the system to follow the lead of other HBCUs and adopt a dress code. “I walked around campus the other day. I think we need it,” he told board members at Friday’s meeting in Baton Rouge.

Ruston girl, 8, dies from brain-eating amoeba infection

Lillian Smart, who health officials believe contracted a brain-eating amoeba from swimming in a North Louisiana lake, died Saturday at a Shreveport-area hospital from an infection linked to the pathogen. She had turned 8 years old a day earlier. She is the fifth person in Louisiana to die from such an infection in the past 15 years.

New Orleans’ stormwater strategy must be equitable and inclusive

Imagine a stormwater fee in New Orleans that is right-sized and distributed across all properties citywide, with minimal exemptions, one that includes residential and commercial properties, large tax-exempt parcels owned by universities, hospitals and government. Imagine a system where everyone is paying something that is proportionate to the runoff they create, but no one is paying more than they can afford.
