The Louisiana Legislature voted for a law change that benefits only one person, state Rep. Steven Jackson, D-Shreveport, by erasing an ethics fine he faces. As recently as June, the ethics board voted unanimously to enforce the monetary penalty over Jackson’s objections. But the state’s top ethics officials believes the new law will compel board members to revoke the fine regardless of what they desire.

Trail rides are a deeply rooted tradition that celebrates the legacy of Black cowboys in Louisiana and other parts of the South. But as the culture has shifted away from horsemanship and toward entertainment and nightlife, new problems have emerged. In response to gun violence and property damage, local authorities have put a temporary stop to large-scale rides.

A bipartisan effort to rein in President Donald Trump’s efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education has cleared its first major legislative hurdle in a bipartisan U.S. Senate committee vote. U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, who leads the committee and voted against the bill, said he’s on board with one of the transfers the Trump administration proposes.

The First Amendment applies only to freedom of speech as it pertains to government action. That’s why you hear people say, “freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences.” But I’m tired of how society has become a game of gotcha. It’s practically a national pastime to drag people online and call for their firing over their opinion.
