State lawmakers gave foster parents more money — or so they thought

Frustrated foster parents vented to a panel of Louisiana lawmakers this week about seeing less money from the state to care for kids in state custody. The news came as a surprise to legislators, who added almost $17 million to the state budget this spring to boost the monthly per-child payments to those families.

First Circuit rules LSU has to make employee investigation records public

A state appellate court has ruled LSU must release its investigative records about a former administrator accused of catfishing students to the former editor of its student paper.

White House going forward with FDA nominee despite Cassidy’s concerns

President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration will face challenges securing Senate confirmation after the committee chairman in charge of that process expressed doubts. U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, as chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, has control over whether to schedule a confirmation hearing or a committee vote on Dr. Heidi Overton’s nomination.

State gives UL Monroe $2 million to address rural nursing shortage

The Louisiana Board of Regents projects the state will have a shortfall of 6,000 nurses by 2030. The problem is particularly acute in rural areas in Northeast Louisiana, which the health department has designated professional shortage areas.
