Today is the final day of qualifying for candidates in the May party primaries in Louisiana. U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy and his emerging challenger, U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow, are expected to sign up for the Republican ballot this afternoon. We’ll be there for any other surprises.

U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, one of the state’s most popular elected officials, raises money for Republicans across the country as a party leader. But he told reporters Thursday after he qualified for reelection that he’s not ready to back a candidate in the contentious GOP primary for Louisiana’s U.S. Senate race. “I’m focused on my race right now,” he said.
