State Sen. Alan Seabaugh takes credit for ousting Northwestern State University’s president in 2024 and, with the backing of Gov. Jeff Landry, replacing him with former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Jimmy Genovese. Two years later, Genovese says he can’t count on either one to advance his plans for the school, which include starting the first law school in North Louisiana.

The Great American State Fair on the National Mall has all the trappings of a classic state fair: food vendors, merchandise, a Ferris wheel and scores of activities. But on Tuesday, just days before the nation’s 250th anniversary, one thing was, for the most part, notably absent. The crowds.

The military air base in Belle Chasse is slated to receive new squadrons of fighter jets for the U.S. Navy and Air Force reservists stationed there. The former commander of the Navy squadron there, who worked behind the scenes to secure the aircraft, said their arrival will help ensure the future viability of the base. More investment in other military posts in Louisiana is also in the works.

The public education advocates continue to believe Gov. Jeff Landry overstepped his constitutional authority by shifting school funding into teacher pay stipends through an executive order. But they said the “difficult and drawn out process” of a lawsuit would create “uncertain prospects for success.”

Each year since the fall of Roe v. Wade, the Louisiana Legislature has advanced increasingly aggressive versions of the state’s abortion ban, often under the guise of targeting bad actors. In reality, these policies continue to make it harder for women to access essential healthcare.
