More states hold parents accountable for kids’ crime. Does it work?

When young children and teenagers get into trouble, the question often comes quickly: Where were their parents? Louisiana has among the strictest laws on its books in this area, allowing parents to be prosecuted when their child under 17 is involved in a violent felony, with penalties of up to 10 years in prison. But there is little empirical evidence showing that these types of laws around the country actually reduce youth crime.

Trump’s offshore wind crackdown reaches Gulf of Mexico

President Donald Trump promised to sign an executive order on his first day back in office that would kill offshore wind. In the Gulf of Mexico, his administration finally achieved that goal — more than 500 days later — by promising to sign something else: a very big check for one company to walk away from its wind energy plans off the coasts of Louisiana, California and New York.

Louisiana leads nation with veterans in poverty, analysis finds

The Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs acknowledged the findings but also noted census data used in the study is a multi-year snapshot from a period that included significant economic disruption from the coronavirus pandemic. Although COVID-19 could have inflated overall rates, the analysis compared data from all 50 states, and nothing suggests the pandemic skewed Louisiana’s of veteran poverty rate more than the rest of the country.

Families push states for more scrutiny of domestic violence deaths

Families who believe local officials prematurely ruled their loved ones’ deaths suicides or accidents — rather than investigating whether domestic violence played a role — are pushing lawmakers in a growing number of states to require additional scrutiny. Advocates call the deaths “hidden homicides” — killings they say may be staged to look like suicides, overdoses or accidents and then overlooked by investigators.
